The MaPrimeRénov’ grant cap: the rule and worked examples
Many sites add MaPrimeRénov’ and the CEE bonus together. The law caps their total: above it, MaPrimeRénov’ falls. Here is by how much.
The grant cap (“écrêtement”) is the rule that stops grants covering the whole expense. Decree no. 2020-26 of 14 January 2020 sets a ceiling: MaPrimeRénov’, the CEE bonus and other public grants together cannot exceed 90 % of the eligible expense for a blue household, 75 % for yellow and 60 % for purple. The eligible expense is the quote including VAT, up to the item’s expense ceiling: €12,000 for an air-to-water heat pump, €18,000 for ground-source. If the total exceeds it, MaPrimeRénov’ is reduced, never the CEE bonus. With the Coup de pouce, which multiplies the CEE bonus by five, the cap hits almost every case, all the more as the quote is low: a purple household fitting an air-to-water heat pump for €9,000 can lose much of its flat rate. The site’s calculator applies this rule and shows the amount cut.

The rule in one formula
MaPrimeRénov’ paid = the smaller of two amounts: your colour’s flat rate, or (maximum share × eligible expense) − CEE bonus − other grants. The maximum share is 90 %, 75 %, 60 % or 40 % depending on colour. The eligible expense is the quote including VAT, capped. The rule comes from article 3 of decree no. 2020-26.
Five worked cases
| Case | Maximum grants | CEE bonus | MPR flat rate | MPR paid | Cut |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Air-to-water, blue, €12,000 quote | €10,800 | €7,985 | €5,000 | €2,815 | −€2,185 |
| Air-to-water, purple, €9,000 quote | €5,400 | €4,810 | €3,000 | €590 | −€2,410 |
| Air-to-water, purple, €15,788 quote | €7,200 | €4,810 | €3,000 | €2,390 | −€610 |
| Ground-source, purple, €18,000 quote | €10,800 | €5,366 | €6,000 | €5,434 | −€566 |
| Ground-source, yellow, €14,000 quote | €10,500 | €8,907 | €9,000 | €1,593 | −€7,407 |
In all five cases, MaPrimeRénov’ is reduced. The blue household has the highest grant ceiling, but also the largest CEE bonus, bought at the “fuel poverty” price: on its own it covers more than half the expense. The purple household with a low quote loses almost all its flat rate, because the CEE bonus with Coup de pouce already fills almost all its ceiling. With a higher quote, the ceiling rises and the cut shrinks. The Coup de pouce therefore makes the cap routine: it is the rule, not the exception.
How much MaPrimeRénov’ for my heat pump?
MaPrimeRénov’ paid
€4,000
| yellow flat rate | €4,000 |
| Maximum grants (cap) | €9,000 |
| Removed by the cap | €0 |
| Out of pocket | €7,000 |
The grant ceiling, quote by quote
| Quote incl. VAT | Blue | Yellow | Purple | Pink |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| €8,000 | €7,200 | €6,000 | €4,800 | €3,200 |
| €12,000 | €10,800 | €9,000 | €7,200 | €4,800 |
| €16,000 | €10,800 | €9,000 | €7,200 | €4,800 |
Above the expense ceiling, the grant ceiling stops rising: a dearer quote brings no extra grant. Compare this amount with the CEE bonus shown on the quote to see what will be left of MaPrimeRénov’. For a pink household the ceiling still applies, although it receives no MaPrimeRénov’ for a heat pump: it limits the CEE bonus and any local grant instead. The cap is checked by Anah when it pays the grant, on the final invoice: if the invoice is lower than the quote, the ceiling falls with it and the grant can shrink after the work.
What it means for your choice
A cheaper quote stays cheaper: the cap reduces grants, but never so far that a low quote costs more than a high one. It does, however, make adverts promising “up to X of MaPrimeRénov’ plus Y of bonus” wrong. Look at the out-of-pocket cost, worked out by the calculator, rather than the sum of grants.
Other grants count too
Grants from local authorities (region, département, town) count towards the ceiling. If you receive one, add it to your sums: it can reduce MaPrimeRénov’ by the same amount. The zero-rate eco-loan, being a loan and not a grant, does not count.
And in 2027?
The 2027 draft budget, not voted as of 23 October 2026, provides that heat pumps be “funded solely by energy saving certificates”. If adopted as it stands, the question of capping per-item heat pump grants would vanish along with MaPrimeRénov’ itself. This is still to come: nothing is decided.
